By the middle of the campaign, El Cid is forging alliances with Price Motamid of the Moors. Alfonso becomes jealous of El Cid's growing fame, and exiles him not once but twice. Unfortunately, Sancho is murdered (probably by Alfonso) and El Cid begrudgingly but honorably chooses to serve Alfonso. In the early scenarios, El Cid becomes a champion to King Sancho and must defeat Sancho's wicked brother Alfonso. The climax of El Cid's endeavors occurred when a huge army of Moslems from Africa invaded Spain under the guise of reinforcing the Moors. During the campaign, in fact, your civilization will switch back and forth from Spanish to Saracen (Moor).

Although he originally served the Christian kings of Le¿n and Castille, D¿az also worked for the Moors before finally establishing his own kingdom of Valencia. Unfortunately, the kings ruled with much less nobility, and D¿az was exiled several times out of fear of his growing reputation as a hero to the people. D¿az was a capable knight and loyal vassal to whatever king he served. Into this nest of intrigue came Rodrigo D¿az de Bivar, who was called The Cid from the Arabic "siddi" or lord. An uneasy cold war evolved between north and south, with neither side able to unify their leaders into an army capable of challenging the other. For centuries, it was composed of several smaller Christian kingdoms to the north and a huge empire to the south of the Moslem Moors. Spain, as a singular nation, did not emerge until late in the AOK time period. In some cases the differences in a scenario played on the easiest and most difficult settings are so extreme that it is almost worth playing the scenario both ways to see all the differences. The new difficulty level system in the Conquerors Expansion will ensure that casual gamers can finish any scenario in an hour or so, while hardcore fans should face some pretty titanic struggles. I particularly want to mention difficulty level, because we came to the conclusion that the AOK campaigns were probably too hard for many players. We have learned a lot about storytelling, using triggers and difficulty level. I think that players will find all four campaigns to be better than those in Age of Kings. Thus, we have the Battles of the Conquerors-eight scenarios spotlighting battles such as Agincourt, Lepanto and Manzikert. As a fourth campaign, we brought to light an idea that had been kicking around since AOK: what to do with all those famous battles that were important in history, but not robust enough to support an entire campaign. In the end, we came up with three great names: Montezuma of the Aztecs, El Cid of the Spanish, and Attila the Hun. As we whittled this list down, we focused on those conflicts that would best show off the new civilizations, and which conquerors players would most want to portray. We kicked off the Age of Kings expansion pack with a long list of famous conquerors, all of whom could support great campaigns. And check out our coverage of Age of Empires II.Ĭampaigns In Age Of Empires II: The Conquerors Expansion Be sure to tune in next week for our full, hands-on preview and the next campaign in the game, as Montezuma tries to drive the hated Spanish from South America. Last week we brought you details on the Attila the Hun campaign.
